dennis coffy - black belt jones theme (1974)
i love me some soul cinema. nothing makes me want in sit in bed all day on a sunny saturday more than watching blaxploitation movies. i am trying to break the habit of calling these flicks "blaxploitation". its kind of like the ongoing dispute over calling black folks "black" or "african american" i prefer "negro" myself, but you better say it really cool like my mama, "negro, please"... so i was watching the hell out of some bruce lee movies, enter the dragon to be specific, and remembered how fantastic jim kelly looked. man that guy was gorgeous; a yucky handsome. the original "bruce leroy".
one of my favorite jim kelly flicks is "black belt jones" 1974. the soundtrack is written by the baddest white boy to slap a wah wah - dennis coffy. straight from the motor city dennis was one the first caucasian musicians to step foot in the motown basement. he has been known to be one the best session players which leds me to believe this is the reason his music keeps getting sampled to its death. y'all are killing me out there, but i overstand. anyway, this brother from a light skinned mother is one of the greatest & under appreciated cats that help built the foundation of funk. thank dennis. love-joy
